Thinking About Chanukah Next Week

I like this article by Nina Amir. She describes the connection between lighting Chanukah candles and lighting Shabbat candles. It may surprise you!

Thanksgiving Shabbat

This quote from my FridayLight.org email today says it all, doesn't it?

"...all that we have to be thankful for raises us above the mundane, reminds us of our purpose and imbues us with genuine joy.

But what if Shabbat could be our weekly Thanksgiving Day? After all, Shabbat is also a time to come together, have good food and celebrate the gifts in our lives."

and Shabbos is for everyone.
Now it's up to us to
light the candles...

Attaching To The Eternal On Shabbos

"The expenditures for Shabbat must be focused on the World to Come. They cannot be to earn more money for this world. They cannot be to show off to our friends. They cannot be just to have more and better food.
We begin by asking ourselves,
“What can I do to enhance my Shabbat
so that I can attach to the eternal?”

I found this quote at TheFoundationStone.org and choose to share it today because it's such a good question for us all to consider each week before the Sabbath Day.

shabbosevePreparing for the evening of each Sabbath Day is a joy in many ways. Besides the festive atmosphere of sharing, all the money I spend on remembering and observing Shabbos is elevated, and in turn it can enhance the whole week for me, and for my family and guests.

Shabbos is The Prize

naglequoteI love this quote, and yes, it makes me think about Shabbos.  Why?

Because Shabbos is the prize for me, the highlight of my week and my life. It's the gift I enjoy receiving while  I am also giving myself the time to relax and refresh. Very often I have to stand up for myself to take the time, a whole day each week to honor The Sabbath.

The World Is Ours To Make

One of my favorite teachers, Zion Nefesh said this in his daily www.DailyZohar.com email today:

Genesis 2:3
“וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת-יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי, וַיְקַדֵּשׁ אֹתוֹ: כִּי בוֹ שָׁבַת מִכָּל-מְלַאכְתּוֹ, אֲשֶׁר-בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים לַעֲשׂוֹת”
“And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which GOD (ELHYM אֱלֹהִים) Created to make.”

The last three words of the three verses that sum up the story of Creation tell us that the world was made for us ‘to make’. This is our temporary world that we come into for a short time for the process of tikkun.

This is a big responsibility for me. My tikkun, my opportunity to repair the world in my own way is a lifetime endeavor.  First I have to find myself, and only then can I find my true tikkun. I make my own world by finding my true self and my true tikkun. That is how I begin to repair the world, to make or create the world here and now.

On the Sabbath I rest from my making and creating as the Creator of the Universe rested from His work. Sometimes it's hard to remember to stop making and creating for a whole day, isn't it?
